Mrs. Schoendorff with her award.2/1/2022 - Christine Schoendorff, an elementary music teacher at Howell’s Voyager Elementary, has been named the 2021-2022 Michigan Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Elementary Teacher of the Year. Annually, the Michigan VFW selects an elementary, middle school, and high school teacher to receive its Teacher of the Year Awards. According to the nomination form, the VFW Teacher of the Year awards honor educators “who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America’s history and traditions effectively.” Schoendorff was presented with the honor on Saturday, January 29, at the Michigan VFW Mid-Winter Conference.

Prior to being named the Michigan VFW Elementary Teacher of the Year, Schoendorff was honored by the VFW at both the local post and District levels. In the VFW Teacher of the Year program, nominations are submitted to a local VFW Post. The nominations are reviewed, and the top nominees advance in the program.

“I was very humbled to have advanced to represent K-5 teachers at the state level. I am deeply humbled and honored to be recognized by people I admire so much,” said Schoendorff. “The awards ceremony was a beautiful event with VFW officers from across the county. It was definitely a highlight of my career.”

“We are lucky to have Christine here in Howell. Her passion for teaching shows in everything she does,” said Erin MacGregor, Ed.S. Howell Public Schools superintendent. “Christine always goes above and beyond. Under her direction, the Voices of Voyager Choir has performed the National Anthem at Comerica Park before a Detroit Tigers game and often performs at various community events. She helps provide the foundation for our outstanding vocal music programs.”

As a Michigan VFW Teacher of the Year, Schoendorff is now a nominee for the National VFW Teacher of the Year Award. The winner of that award will be announced in May.
